The sale marks the first of its kind in Europe – and only the third globally – in which a skeleton of an entire T-rex is auctioned off, the Koller auction house in Zurich said.
The skeleton, called Trinity, is 3.9 meters high and has been valued at between six and eight million Swiss francs, corresponding to around SEK 70–90 million. But Christian Link at the auction house believes that the final sum will be higher.
– Trinity is one of the most spectacular tyrannosaurus rex skeletons in existence, a well-preserved and masterfully restored fossil.
According to the auction house, only 32 skeletons of adult t-rex have been found around the world.
The skeleton Trinity consists of three different t-rex. They were unearthed between 2008 and 2013 in the states of Montana and Wyoming in the United States. The skull consists of a single dinosaur.
Auction sales of dinosaur skeletons and other fossils have raised tens of millions of dollars in recent years. However, experts have warned that the trade could disadvantage science when the specimens are placed in private hands.
Trinity will be auctioned on April 18.
