Six Beaches Officially Opened for Swimming in Odessa Despite Safety Concerns

On August 12, six beaches were officially opened for swimming in Odessa, informed Head of the Odessa Regional Administration Oleg Kiper.

According to him, the beaches will be available from eight in the morning until eight in the evening. They will be closed for the duration of the air raid, upon detection of suspicious objects and during a storm from two points.

Mayor of Odessa Gennady Trukhanov addedthat in case of an alarm, shelters are provided near the beaches, and special nets are provided in the water to prevent mines from entering. Trukhanov also stressed that untested beaches are dangerous to visit.

“Our task is to prepare all the necessary infrastructure. However, in my personal opinion, a beach holiday – just a holiday – is a bit out of time while our defenders are fighting for every meter of Ukrainian land,” the mayor said.

Ukrainian edition of NV clarifiedthat the beaches in Odessa have been officially closed since the beginning of a full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, in particular because of the threat of drifting sea mines being washed ashore. At the same time, people still visited and bathed them. Several vacationers died due to mine explosions, the newspaper writes.

Formerly UNIAN agency wrotethat the authorities of Odessa planned to open some beaches in June, but this had to be postponed due to the breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station. June 18 City Council of Odessa informedthat the beaches of the city were declared unsuitable for swimming due to a significant deterioration in the state of the water and a danger to human health.
