Sinovac-Pfizer Needs a Booster, How about the AstraZeneca Vaccine?

Jakarta

AstraZeneca CEO, Pascal Soriot, revealed that the third Corona vaccine or booster vaccine does not yet have a clear scientific basis. He also does not believe that the booster vaccine can create a stronger advanced immunity against COVID-19.

Soriot explained AstraZeneca vaccine has produced high levels of immune cells. This means the vaccine should be able to fight COVID-19 infection in the long term.

“There are two dimensions of immunity. First, antibodies (which) decrease over time, but a very important second dimension of vaccination are the so-called T-cells. They tend to protect people from severe disease and also confer resistance,” Soriot was quoted as saying. from CNBC International, Friday (30/7/2021).

“With the technology we use, we have a very high production of T-cells. We hope we can have a vaccine that is durable to protect for a long time,” he continued.

Soriot said to determine whether a booster vaccine is needed is to watch the vaccine’s efficacy decrease over time. Until now, his party admitted that they had not seen any decrease in efficacy that could affect the vaccine they made.

“We know that our (vaccine) has decreased antibody (over time). We haven’t seen a decrease in efficacy, but it’s a bit early to assess and I’m hopeful that T-cells will provide this long-lasting, long-lasting protection,” Soriot said.

Previously, Sinovac and Pfizer vaccines also experienced a decrease in vaccine efficacy or efficacy. This encourages the possibility of recommendations for giving booster vaccines to increase protection from the Corona virus.

Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla also firmly believes that people need a booster dose. This is because the antibodies produced by the vaccine can fade over time and also the development of the Delta variant which is increasingly widespread.

“We are very, very confident that the third dose of the vaccine will provide sufficient immunity to protect against varian Delta COVID-19 is spreading faster,” Bourla said.

Bourla also admitted that his vaccine experienced a reduction in efficacy within a few months after injection.

“The efficacy of the vaccine decreases to about 84 percent, within 4-6 months after the second dose is given,” he added.
