Singkawang residents are sick with smallpox, what’s the difference between chicken pox and monkey pox?

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

The Indonesian Ministry of Health has confirmed that residents in Singkawang Regency, West Kalimantan are not infected with monkeypox, but chickenpox. What’s the difference chicken pox and monkey pox?

“Not monkeypox huh, but Varicella. The final diagnosis from the Sudarso Hospital doctor was Varicella,” said the Director General of Disease Prevention and Control (P2P) of the Ministry of Health, Maxi Rein Rondonuwu, adding to CNNIndonesia.com, Friday (17/6).

Although both are named smallpox, these two types of disease have many differences.

Here’s the difference between chickenpox and monkeypox.

1. Virus

Monkeypox, also known as monkeypox, is a rare viral zoonotic disease that was first discovered in remote areas of Africa. Because it is zoonotic, this virus is transmitted from animals infected with the Orthopoxvirus virus, the Poxviridae family.

While chickenpox or chickenpox (varicella) is a highly contagious infection caused by the Varicella zoster virus.

2. Contagion

Primary monkeypox transmission occurs by direct contact with blood, body fluids, or skin lesions of infected animals. The World Health Organization (WHO) says monkeys, rats and squirrels are the most likely reservoirs for monkeypox. In addition, consuming infected animal meat that is not cooked properly can also increase the risk of contracting monkeypox.

In secular transmission, the monkeypox virus can be spread from human to human through close contact with the respiratory tract of an infected person, skin lesions of an infected person, and the fluids of an infected person.

While chickenpox is very easily transmitted through breathing or direct contact with skin lesions of infected people. These infections can also be spread in a similar way to colds and flu.

4. Incubation period

The incubation period or from transmission when the cause of the disease enters the body to the onset of disease between monkeypox and chickenpox is also different. The incubation period is one of the differences between chickenpox and monkeypox.

Monkeypox takes from 5-21 days. Meanwhile, chickenpox, quoted from Medical News Today, requires an incubation period of 10-21 days.

5. Symptoms

Monkeypox is characterized by the appearance of fever, severe headache, swollen lymph nodes, back pain, muscle aches, and fatigue on days 0-5.

About 1-3 days after the fever, a rash-like eruption appears on the skin starting from the face and spreading to other parts of the body. This rash develops fluid-filled until the 10th day and disappears by the third week.

Broadly speaking, the symptoms of chickenpox are not too different from monkeypox. Chickenpox is characterized by symptoms of fever, loss of appetite, and nausea.

After that, smallpox appears in the form of rashes and spots all over the body. The spots tend to be small, red, and itchy. This rash usually goes away or goes away on its own within 10 days.

6. Handling

WHO states, until now there is no specific treatment or vaccine available for monkeypox infection. However, this outbreak can be controlled with prompt treatment of infected people.

Meanwhile, chickenpox generally heals within a week or two without treatment. There is no specific drug that can stop the chickenpox virus. Doctors usually give medicine to reduce the symptoms of itching and discomfort due to chickenpox.

Those are some of the differences between chickenpox and monkeypox.
