Singaporean Students Make Hundreds of Millions Selling Noodles in Jakarta Canteen

Jakarta

Instead of looking for a side job, these three prospective students actually sell noodles for money in the canteen. The capital is hundreds of millions of rupiah.

Before entering college, students usually prefer to spend time relaxing, playing with friends or looking for side jobs. But this is different for three prospective students from Singapore named Gerald Lee, Kelvin Ching and Tan Kuang Feng.

Reporting from Shin Min Daily News (08/02), these three prospective students decided to start a culinary business by opening a small food shop selling mee hoon kueh and ban mian.

Mee hoon kueh itself is a Singaporean style of flat square cut noodles served with clear broth. Meanwhile, for ban mian, this Chinese style noodle dish is served with various toppings from meat to mushrooms.

The food shop owned by these three prospective students is called Jiak Mee, which means eating noodles, located in the street food canteen above the Bishan bus terminal.

What’s unique is that all the food and noodles sold here are made homemade using Kelvin’s family recipes, because in the past his parents also sold noodles at street food centers or Hawker centers.

Kelvin, who had experience since childhood and had helped his parents sell food, became interested in setting up his own business. Finally, with the support of two friends, Gerald and Kuan, the three of them started collecting money for initial capital to sell.

Even though they only opened a small food shop and could be called street food, the funds spent by the three of them were not small. In total, they spent SGD 30,000 (Rp. 350 million) from their savings to start selling.

“At first I wanted to find a side job while waiting to go to college, so I thought why don’t I try opening my own business with support from my family,” said Kelvin.

Before opening the Jiak Mee shop, the three of them had been practicing cooking and making food for the previous two months. The prices of the food they offer are also still cheap for food in Singapore.

For example, a portion of mee hoon kueh soup costs from SGD 4.80 (Rp. 55,800). Then for dry noodles without sauce the price starts from SGD 5.80 (Rp. 67,500).

Even though they have only been operating for less than a month, their sales can be said to be selling well. Because in a day they can now sell more than 200 portions of noodles and mee hon with long queues.

Kelvin also plans to add new employees, so that the three of them can go to college in peace without fear that their business will have to close because there is no one to serve them.
