Simultaneous Eid al-Fitr Celebration Expected in Indonesia on April 10, 2024

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Indonesian Muslims are likely to celebrate Eid al-Fitr simultaneously tomorrow, Wednesday (10/4/2024). This is different from last year where Eid al-Fitr was celebrated on a different day.

The Ministry of Religion will hold an Isbat Session today, Tuesday (9/4/2024), to determine the 1st Shawwal of Eid al-Fitr 1445 Hijriah.

Even though it hasn’t been held yet, the Ministry of Religion estimates that 1 Shawwal will fall on April 10 2024, the same as the Muhammadiyah mass organization.

The potential for simultaneous Eid on April 10 2024 is due to the fulfillment of the minimum requirements for the new moon, based on the MABIMS (Religious Ministers of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore) criteria. The criteria consist of a minimum height of the crescent moon of 3 degrees and an elongation or angular distance between the Moon and the Sun of at least 6.4 degrees.

In contrast to the government which uses the rukyatul hilal method, Muhammadiyah uses the Hisab Hakiki Wujudul Hilal method in determining Eid al-Fitr 1 Syawal 1445 Hijriyah. Based on the Announcement of PP Muhammadiyah Number 1/MLM/I.0/E/2024 concerning Determination of the Results of the Reckoning of Ramadan, Shawwal and Dzulhijjah 1445 H, the height of the Moon at sunset on April 9 2024 M in Yogyakarta (-07° 48′ South Latitude and 2 = 110° 21′ E) +06° 08′ 28″ (hilal already exists), and in Indonesian territory at sunset the Moon is above the horizon.

For the record, Indonesian Muslims celebrated Eid al-Fitr on different days last year.
Muhammadiyah residents will celebrate on April 21 2023 while most others will celebrate on April 22 2023 as determined by the government.

Celebrating Eid al-Fitr on different days is actually nothing new in Indonesia. For decades, Indonesia has often celebrated different Eids.
Usually different Eids involve the two largest mass organizations in Indonesia, namely Muhammadiyah and Nahdlatul Ulama.

Differences occur because there are also differences in the basis of calculations. Muhammadiyah uses the reckoning method in determining 1 Shawwal. Meanwhile, NU people use the rukyat method.

Throughout the period 2004-2023 or the last 20 years, Indonesia has celebrated Idul Fitri on different days four times. The four periods are 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2023.

The following is the beginning of 1 Shawwal or Eid al-Fitr for the last 20 years:
