Significant Progress in Guarding Bulgarian-Turkish Border: Prime Minister Denkov’s Visit to Germany

Significant progress has been made in the last six months in guarding the Bulgarian-Turkish border. This is due both to our efforts and to the help of interested European countries such as Austria and Germany, said Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov in Berlin.

He was on a short visit to the German capital at the invitation of Chancellor Olaf Scholz, the government press service reported.

Denkov presented Bulgaria’s role in coordinating the fight against migrant traffickers at the European level with the participation of Europol and Frontex. As a positive result, he pointed to the significantly higher number of migrants who were not allowed into the territory of the European Union (EU), as well as those caught inside the country compared to the previous period.

Furthermore Bulgaria technically equips the border with new cameras and drones, a large number of off-road vehicles have been ordered to facilitate the work of the patrols.

“At the moment, the situation is quite different from before. That’s why we have invited German, Austrian and Dutch border guards to come and see on the spot and, if they want, participate in the security together with their Bulgarian colleagues. We are open to any kind of protection cooperation on the external borders of the EU,” said Academician Denkov.

He referred to the official statistics which show that the share of migrants who reach Germany, Austria and Central Europe through Bulgaria, is very small compared to those who come to Western Europe through the Mediterranean Sea.

They both agreed that an exceptional focus must be placed on the protection of the EU’s external borders and to help countries which are under the greatest pressure.

“Because if we fail to keep this influx of migrants at a low level, all possible options for redistribution within the Union will not solve the issue. They will simply postpone and redistribute the problem from one country to another,” Denkov pointed out.

“Bulgaria and Germany are very reliable partners, allies and friends,” emphasized the German chancellor. Germany fully supports the acceptance of Bulgaria as a full member of the Schengen area and will advocate this position to European partners as well.

Olaf Scholz praised the reforms initiated in the judicial system in our country country, “because the rule of law is one of the most important achievements of the European Union”.

The Chancellor especially thanked the Bulgarian Prime Minister for Bulgaria’s position regarding the war in Ukraine and emphasized the important role of our country for the provision of transport corridors for the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea.

According to him, the Bulgarian government strives to implement the justice reform by the end of the year in order to invalidate the arguments of The Netherlands “opposes” our membership.

They will meet again in the coming days – within the framework of the meeting of the European political community and the informal European Council, where the situation in the EU, the Western Balkans and the relations with the neighbors will be discussed.
