‘Significant mutation, immune system escapes’

The more the virus spreads, the more it mutates. This is more or less the scientific refrain that many virologists or infectious diseases have been repeating for some time with respect to what could be the evolution of the pandemic from Coronavirus. And, since the Sars-Cov2 has burst into mankind, several variants have been found. After the English one, the Brazilian one makes more news than the others. Compared to the “British” virus which had the characteristic of being substantially only more widespread than what can now be defined as “classic”, the South American one is worrying because it would have the ability to reinfect those who have already had a previous diagnosis of positivity.

Brazilian variant, Bassetti explains his point of view

“The Brazilian variant ‘E484K’ appears to be a fairly significant mutation.” To admit it is Matteo Bassetti in some statements released atAdnkronos Salute.

It is clear that these mutations must be adequately and meticulously studied also in Italy because the virus is circulating” .

That of Bassetti appears more what else is a warning to raise awareness of the need to enable scientists to carry out crucial research work.

It is no coincidence that the infectious disease specialist pointed out that for investigations of this type adequate equipment is required for laboratory activities and consequently also efforts on the investment profile. Also because, like the same Bassetti he pointed out, it is a concrete scenario that new variants of the coronavirus may reveal themselves in the near future.

At the moment the vaccine seems to continue to maintain efficacy with most of the new forms of virus that have emerged, but even if a resistant form were to take life, there is the possibility of implementing a valid contrast strategy. “We know – pointed out Matteo Bassetti – that the vaccine can be modified, as is already the case for the flu vaccines, to combat them”.
