A Covid-19 pandemic delayed the disclosure of the ranking of national exams, which this Friday is made public.
This year, unsurprisingly, the results show that, in 2019, private education continues to occupy the top places in the secondary education table and there are 11 public schools in the first 50 positions.
First public school in 34th place in the ranking
Private education has been pushing the public into the national exam table for secondary education. The first public school enters six places later than in 2018.
In the SIC / Expresso ranking, and with more than 100 exams, the well-known Infanta D. Maria Secondary School, in Coimbra, is the first, but in 34th place, with an average of 13.02 points.
The second is a revelation: the Basic and Secondary School, Dr. Serafim Leite, in São João da Madeira, with an average of 12.96 points. It went up 365 places in the exam table.
In the first 50 schools with the best grades, there are 11 public schools in Coimbra, Braga, Porto, Viseu, Aveiro and Lisbon.
In a curious way, in the municipality of Vila Nova de Famalicão, in Braga, there are three public schools in very positive positions:
- Padre Benjamim Salgado High School, 12.5 values, (48th)
- Camilo Castelo Branco High School, 12.03 values, (66th)
- D. Sancho I Secondary School, 11.91 values, (82nd)
Schools: no surprises
In the dance of the first places in the ranking, the colleges are already known: maintaining the leadership o Our Lady of the Rosary School, in Porto, with 15.55 values, the only one with an average higher than 15, but which falls about two values.
Second, the Colégio D. Diogo de Sousa, in Braga, with 14.94, and in the third position the Salesians of Lisbon, with 14.8 values.
In the list of 521 schools, the high school Passos Manuel it is practically at the end of the table with a negative average of 7.85, very conditioned by the average of the Physics exam that did not reach the four values (3.76). It fell from an average of 12.
The last secondary is the Padre Manuel Álvares Basic and Secondary School, in Ribeira Brava, with the lowest average ranking: 7.67 points.
At the end of the table, the schools that exist are located in Dili, Timor, and in S. Tomé and Príncipe. 129 schools have less than 10 average in national exams
Professional Education gains ground
The professional path has been gaining space as a teaching alternative. In the vast majority of schools, students complete the course in three years.
In 48 vocational education establishments, the dropout rate is 0%. In some, such as Bissaya Barreto High School, in Coimbra,
with only one course, 100% of students complete their education in the allotted time.

Professional education has allowed the consolidation of the completion of 12 years of compulsory education and there are students who end up returning to regular education, where the first confrontation of students with national exams takes place in the 9th year, sealing the end of basic education.
Counting schools with more than 50 tests and, on a scale of up to 100 percent, in 2019, first, comes the Boarding School Slaves Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Porto, (86.39), which rose 11 places.
Second, the College of Plantains, in Sintra (85.44) which rose one position. Third, the Queen Elizabeth School, in Coimbra (82.97) which changed 18 positions.
In the three private companies, the retention rate in the 7th, 8th and 9th years is 0%. The subjects analyzed and the only ones with exam are Portuguese and Mathematics.
