Cape Verdean singer Jorge Neto died today at Hospital Egas Moniz in Lisbon, a source at the Cape Verde embassy in Lisbon told Lusa.
The same source said he did not have more details about the singer’s death at the moment and sent more information to an embassy note to be issued later.
The Cape Verdean artist, who lived in Portugal and made his career in Europe, especially with Cape Verdean communities, suffered a stroke at home on December 30 and has since been hospitalized, “in a deep coma”, according to statement from the embassy in Lisbon issued at the time.
Jorge Neto was born in São Tomé and Príncipe in 1964, being the son of a Cape Verdean mother. He studied in Portugal and later emigrated to Holland, a country with a strong presence of the Cape Verdean community and where he was successful in music, as the vocalist of the band Livity.
After 11 years without recording an album, Jorge Neto released in 2016 “Nha Palco”, his ninth album.
Throughout his more than 30 years of career, he has been successful in several countries, with the Cape Verdean emigrant community, in Europe, Africa and America.
