Should the Rockets be worried about Jalen Green’s development?

There’s no logical answer to whether Jalen Green’s development will stall, and what could happen is that he doesn’t perform as well as expected. His fans may counter that he still scored more than 25 points in several games this season and his defense is better than before. Yes, his defense did improve, but it just evolved from a completely substandard defender to a substandard defender…

The development of Jalen Green is worrying. This third-year student is a new star that the Rockets are trying to cultivate. However, after being coached by Ime Udoka this season, his development does not look good, which makes the Rockets team and fans feel pain.

There’s no logical answer to whether Jalen Green’s development will stall, and what could happen is that he doesn’t perform as well as expected. His fans may counter that he still scored more than 25 points in several games this season and his defense is better than before. Yes, his defense did improve, but it just evolved from a completely substandard defender to a substandard defender.

In addition, there is a stat that must be taken seriously: when he is on the court, the Rockets will score 13.7 points less per 100 possessions. This is quite a heartbreaking fact.

What’s the problem?

He should be a good scorer. Before entering the NBA, he was generally considered to be a good scorer. He himself also claimed that he was a good scorer. However, as of press time, his two-point shooting rate this season is only about 45%, his shooting rate outside the penalty area is even lower than 35%, and his three-point shooting rate is also a sluggish 32.5%. These statistics will be ugly when compared with other players.

The defense has indeed improved, but his defense is still not good. When passing the ball, there will be one or two read passes per game, but the number of passes in the game is still low. He doesn’t really do much good on the court if he can’t score efficiently and in large numbers, a fact reflected in his plus-minus (-1.2 as of press time). Compared with the same period or reference players, this value is indeed inferior to others.

People often say that guards take a long time to develop. Star guards such as Zach LaVine, Jaylen Brown, Devin Booker, De’Aaron Fox and other star guards took a long time to mature. LaVine’s plus-minus in the third year of his career was 0.1, Fox’s plus-minus in the third year was 2.1, and Booker’s plus-minus was 0.9. Jaylen Brown’s data is -2.1, and he only emerged after the fourth year, so Green may still have a chance to copy Brown’s model.

However, history shows that players with a negative plus-minus in their third year have a relatively low chance of growing into a star player. There are many factors that affect the development of these players in their careers. Does the Rockets’ current use or tactics of Green affect his development?

  • Are the Rockets restricted?Greenplaying time?

This is a classic “which came first, the chicken or the egg” cause and effect problem. If there are no chickens laying eggs, how can there be chickens jumping out of eggs? This dialectical causal relationship can be attributed to St. Thomas Aquinas (philosopher and theologian)’s first cause, the initial cause is God.

Back to the topic, is it because the Rockets have restricted his time that his performance is limited, or is his poor performance on the court leading to the team having to restrict his playing time? This is a puzzling conundrum. Now Green may need a little more help, or whether coach Ime Udoka can design strategies for him to create gaps.

According to the NBA’s official definition of gaps, Green’s two-point gap shooting rate is 40.5% and his three-point gap shooting rate is 31.6%. This result raises questions. Is it because Udoka didn’t give him enough space that caused Green to play poorly, or was it because Green didn’t play well that Udoka didn’t dare to use Green well?

Why should Udoka design more tactics for a player who cannot maximize his value? Before Green joined, he was considered a player who could score in any system, not a system player who benefited from a certain system.

  • GreenWill the growth disappoint everyone?

Green is expected to be an offensive player who can help any offensive system. Can he really grow into this type of player in the future? At present, his performance makes it impossible to be optimistic about his future.

He’s not considered a star player, but there are still variables. He had high hopes before joining, but his development has made people withdraw their expectations from him. He still has room for reversal, but he has to work harder to reverse it.

Compared with when he first entered the league, his room for error has been greatly reduced, and the Rockets are about to face a decision moment of whether to keep him or not. When he is eligible to extend his contract, what price will the Rockets want to offer him? What annual salary is reasonable to give him?

He and the Rockets are both in dire straits.
