Should cell phones be banned in schools to improve academic results?

Cell phones are affecting the learning of mathematics and other subjects, reducing the quality of education. This was concluded by the Pisa Tests after surveying students globally, where one in three acknowledged that they are distracted in class because of cell phones and social networks.

Freddy Vega, co-founder of Platzi, the largest online education platform in Latin America, highlighted this section where the OECD itself reviews the negative effect of uncontrolled use of the telephone in schools. “Colombia is one of the countries with the highest number of students who reported that they are distracted by digital devices to learn mathematics,” he pointed.

“There is a direct correlation between the hours spent using the phone per day and the decline in mathematics learning. They measured it in the Pisa Tests. We must ban phones in class,” Vega stated.

The results in the Pisa Tests, at a global level, in mathematics, reading comprehension and science, present the largest drop since 2000, when this measurement began, and in the voice of experts, the impact of the excessive and uncontrolled use of digital devices in class has a lot to do with the disastrous result.

UNESCO recommends banning phones

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) had declared it in July of this year: technology is essential to democratize and enhance education as a support tool in class, but Cell phones in the hands of children and young people constitute distracting elements that should be prohibited to “combat poor academic performance and emotional instability” in educational centers.

The Pisa Tests showed that those countries that already have controls on the use of phones in class obtained better results in the 2022 tests.

In countries like Chile, measures have already begun to be taken in this regard and at an early age the use of cell phones in schools is prohibited. Meanwhile, In Colombia, a ruling by the Constitutional Court establishes that it is the power of each school to define its internal coexistence manuals by statute. and regulations how to restrict the use of telephones in class, but their prohibition is not expressly permitted.

The United States, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, South Korea, among others, already have clear policies that allow the use of telephones to be restricted in class spaces: “Schools must become spaces for socialization without cell phones. The future of those who are going to work in science, artificial intelligence and other tasks is at risk,” says Freddy Vega, from Platzi.

To do?

Schools and parents must agree on policies for mobile phone use by minors:

– Restriction in class. The law in Colombia allows restricting, but not prohibiting, the use of telephones in classrooms. Through manual coexistence, it is possible for schools and universities to establish schedules and spaces for restricted telephone use.

– Restriction at home. As providers of equipment and connectivity, parents must include responsibility and restrictions for their children when giving them a cell phone as part of the agreement.

– Control parental. Both iPhone and Android have functions to control and restrict your children’s cell phone use by hours, prohibited applications, etc. On Android it is done with the Family Link app.
