Shocking attack on Yemen airport: at least 22 dead | Abroad

More than 50 people were injured, medical sources reported to news agencies. There were multiple explosions and shelling. No one has claimed the attack yet. Among the dead is an employee of the International Red Cross. Three emergency workers from the organization were injured.

Cabinet members, including Prime Minister Maeen Abdulmalik Saeed and the Saudi ambassador to Yemen, have been safely transferred to the presidential palace. “We and the members of the government are in the temporary capital Aden and everyone is safe,” the prime minister said via Twitter. “This cowardly terrorist attack on Aden airport is part of the war being waged against the state of Yemen and its people.”

The newly formed cabinet is a coalition of the government of Yemeni President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi with the separatists from the south. They are in civil war with the Iranian-backed Houthi rebels, who control the north of the country and with it the capital Sanaa.

In response, President Hadi, who lives in exile in Saudi Arabia, called on the government to continue its work from Aden. “The terrorist acts of the Iranian-backed Houthi militias and their militant terrorist groups will not prevent the legitimate government from carrying out its duties in the temporary capital of Aden,” he said, according to official Yemeni news agency SABA.

The country in the Arabian Peninsula is one of the poorest in the world. The civil war has greatly increased the suffering of the population. 24 million people, about 80 percent of the population, depend on some form of humanitarian aid.
