Shen Rongjin: Asmol intends to bring the European supply chain to Taiwan

Dutch company ASML has decided to invest more in Taiwan, planning to build a new factory in Linkou Gongyi Industrial Park, New Taipei City, to expand production capacity. The new factory is expected to start construction in July next year, which it will be ASML’s largest investment in Taiwan. Shen Rongjin, vice president of the Executive Yuan, said today that ASML also intends to bring the European supply chain to Taiwan.

Shen Rongjin attended the Semiconductor Key Technology Layout and Talent Cultivation Forum of the Taiwan-Japan Science and Technology Dialogue today, and said that ASML Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Schneider came to Taiwan to meet with President Tsai Ing-wen to thank the government for supporting the ASML layout in Asia. Shen Rongjin revealed that ASML also plans to bring the European supply chain to Taiwan.

Shen Rongjin said that Taiwan’s semiconductor industry chain has spent 50 years of unbroken solid foundation. Through a comprehensive supply chain layout, joint research and development by industry, academia and research, and a enough professional talent training, you can create the most resilient and cost-effective world.

Taiwan Semiconductor’s output value in 2021 will be NT$4.1 trillion, creating employment opportunities for 300,000 people. It ranks first in the world in wafer foundry, packaging and testing, and second in the world in integrated circuit design, making a significant contribution to Taiwan’s economy.

Japanese manufacturers have been handling materials for a long time, and Shen Rongjin said the Ministry of Economic Affairs has made long-term efforts to promote Japanese companies to expand investment in Taiwan. In addition, the Japanese government has invested in resource subsidies, and TSMC has established an R&D center in Tsukuba and a factory in Kumamoto. Taiwan and Japan’s semiconductor supply chains form a closer complementary relationship, symbiosis and co-prosperity.

Shen Rongjin said the government has exhausted everything to solve the problems of water, electricity, land, and training the talents needed for semiconductor development. He took the land as an example. One generation of semiconductor manufacturing process requires 8 factories. At present, TSMC’s 2nm 4 factories will be expanded into the second phase of Zhuke Baoshan, and the rest will be arranged in Zhongke. At this stage, they are all being implemented according to plan.
