Sheinbaum supports initiative to prohibit the sale of “junk food” to minors in CDMX

The head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, reported that it supports the bill presented in the capital Congress by the deputy of Brunette, Miguel Macedo, to prohibit the sale of junk food to minors.

“Yesterday I was talking with the legal adviser. They (the deputies) are proposing that it is one of the essences of this law, that so-called junk food cannot be sold in schools, why up to now there are guidelines, but there is no express prohibition, “he said.

He commented that they will have to work on the guidelines to define what food can and what cannot be sold in schools.

He stressed that this initiative also has to do with work in shops so that junk food is not available to children.

“You can see in supermarkets how when one enters the checkout, it is full of sweets everywhere. So the initiative would have to reorient this type of shelves that are both in shopping centers and in stores. law, “he stated.

Last Thursday, the deputy Miguel Ángel Macedo Escartín considered it essential to generate actions to regulate the access of this type of products in minors, due to the increase in the consumption of foods with high caloric content and sugars in the child population, which has resulted in the high prevalence of overweight.

For this reason, it presented an Initiative to add a fraction to the Law on the Rights of Girls, Boys and Adolescents of Mexico City and combat the problem of overweight and obesity by prohibiting the sale, supply or gift of high-calorie foods.
