“She was born and she was beautiful”

“Every time we went to the hospital during my pregnancy with Pippi, I and my husband were asked if we were sure we didn’t want to terminate the pregnancy, which is allowed up to 24 weeks. A standard protocol, but I didn’t like it. We had made our choice right after we heard that our baby has down, and we stood behind it with all our hearts. Pippi would be very welcome in our family, we already had five children together. The delivery was terribly exciting, Down syndrome also carries a higher risk of physical abnormalities. A whole row of pediatricians and an incubator were ready. Pippi was born and she was beautiful.

Almost two years later, Pippi is now one and a half years old, she has only enriched our family and our lives, she is so very sweet and always cheerful. Her siblings adore her, as do their friends who come to visit here. I never regretted our decision for a second. Since we have zero expectations of Pippi, we mostly enjoy her. Everything she suddenly turns out to be able to do is a small party. We have now made a children’s book with the whole family, with Pippi as a source of inspiration: A Syndrome. With the book we want to show children that everyone is different, and that that is only beautiful.”
