Holly Cray, a 21-year-old mother, was returning from shopping at the supermarket when the incident happened. The young woman fled her home, taking her four-year-old son and five-month-old baby to a hotel. Holly got scared when she saw “hundreds, if not thousands” of spiders coming out of a bunch of bananas she had just bought. She believes it was Phoneutria, also called banana spiders, known for their particularly dangerous and potentially lethal venom.
“Imagine if the mother was in the house? They do not look innocent, it shows in their appearance, “said the young woman to our colleagues from Sun. The company that sells bananas, however, assures that it is “almost impossible” that it is this deadly breed of spiders.
“We sell close to a billion bananas each year, each of which is washed, disinfected and checked by hand before being shipped to England. We also want to reassure our customers that the chances of finding a spider in our bananas are extremely slim and even more so that a tropical spider, like banana spiders, can survive outside of their warm climate. ”
