She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’s Latest Cameo is the MCU’s Funniest Yet

I was unprepared.

She-Hulk: Attorney At Law’s third episode features one of the MCU’s funniest, most out-of-field cameos to date. It’s a bold statement given the variety of cameos inspired in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness last spring – Bruce Campbell, John Krasinski, Charlize Theron and even Patrick Stewart made appearances.(opens in a new tab) — but trust us on this one.

A subplot in episode 3 sees annoying district attorney Dennis Bukowski (Drew Matthews) seek damages from a shapeshifting elf who convinced him he was dating stud Megan Thee. When the court rules in favor of Dennis, the Grammy-winning superstar is revealed to be in the crowd, triumphantly claiming that there is only one stud Megan Thee.

She-Hulk head writer and executive producer Jessica Gao revealed to Indigo Buzz that when she and her team were first working on the episode, they had no idea which famous celebrity they were going to slot into the script. from Dennis.

“For the story to work, we needed a famous, successful and beautiful female celebrity. We didn’t know if she was going to be an actress, a model or a musician, because it could take so many different ways, would change the story a bit, depending on who it was,” Gao said in a Zoom interview.

But then it all clicked when Jameela Jamil, who plays superpowered influencer Titania in She-Hulk, suggested Megan. The two previously worked together on HBO Max’s Legendary, a popular reality competition show.

“When (Jameela) brought in (Megan), it stopped everyone in their tracks. If we knew she would, then obviously it would be her – there would be no one else in the running as far as we were concerned,” Gao said. “It was just a question of, ‘Does she want us?’ And then we found out that she loved Marvel and she loved superheroes. It all happened very quickly, and it was such a dream come true. »

The choice proved particularly exciting for Tatiana Maslany, who doubles as Jennifer Walters and She-Hulk. She-Hulk director and executive producer Kat Coiro told Indigo Buzz, “Tatiana is the biggest Megan fan in the world, so she was buzzing with excitement. »

Episode 3’s post-credits bumper, which sees Jennifer take on Megan as a client before twerking with her to Megan’s song “Body,” stems from Maslany’s love for the rapper. “The scene where they’re dancing was actually added so Tatiana could have a scene with (Megan) and show us her twerking skills, which go along with it,” Coiro said. So when Jennifer tells Megan she’d kill for her, chances are there’s a bit of real Maslany fandom in there as well. And who can blame him?

Megan Thee Stallion is the latest in a string of cool cameos slipped into the first three episodes of She-Hulk, though she’s the only one not connected to the MCU. We also saw Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Abomination (Tim Roth), and Wong (Benedict Wong) appear. Jennifer even notices the number of cameos in one of her asides breaking the fourth wall to the audience… before reminding us that this is her show. As if we were going to forget you, Jennifer!

According to Coiro and Gao, all of the cameos are on purpose, referring to the show’s main genre, the “funny lawyer show”.

“The format of a legal comedy really lends itself to the organic introduction of cameos, because this lawyer is always going to be working on cases, she’s always going to be working on lawsuits, and that naturally means there have to be people behind these lawsuits. “said Gao.

After seeing Megan Thee Stallion in She-Hulk, the most logical question is… Who’s next? We know Daredevil (Charlie Cox) will show up at some point, but Megan’s cameo opens the door wide open for any other celebs.

Who knows, maybe Megan herself will return! After all, she is represented by Jennifer. And wouldn’t it be a joy to see them go through the legal system together? I’m just saying that a Megan Thee Stallion/Tatiana Maslany buddy comedy could be important.
