Shakira first discussed her divorce from footballer Gerard Pique in an interview. The singer finds it extremely difficult to talk about, she says in the October issue of ELLE.
“I kept quiet and tried to process everything,” said Shakira, 45. “It’s hard to talk about, especially because I’m still working on it and because I’m in the spotlight. Our divorce isn’t like a normal divorce. So it’s hard not only for me, but also for my children. Incredibly difficult.”
Shakira finds the huge media attention to her private life complicated. She says she tries to keep her seven and nine year old children as far away as possible. “I try to protect them, this is my main mission. But then at school they hear things from their friends or they come across nasty messages on the Internet. This affects them.”
In early June, Shakira and Piqué announced they will be leaving after a relationship of over 11 years divorce. The couple then asked in a short statement to “respect their privacy in the interest of the welfare of children”.
