“Sexuality so important in a relationship needs to be discussed”: influence of cancer treatment on sex life still taboo

Because there is so little talk about the theme, Marieke Colpaert hadn’t thought about the fact that the treatment would affect her sex life. “In a young relationship you do not expect that you have to deal with that. When a couple gets older, the sexual experience is also different, but then you grow together towards that menopause. With us it was suddenly there, and then you have to to handle.”

So she was not prepared. “That doesn’t work either, it’s just like having a baby. But you should be allowed to get more information. During the start of chemotherapy I received a whole bundle of information that I could read, but that was mainly about restrictions. I wasn’t allowed to eat, for example, or what I could or could not do. But it didn’t say anything about sexuality, not even whether I could kiss my children.”
