Germany in Nations League without ter Stegen
After consultation with national coach Hansi Flick, goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen will not be present at the four Nations League games of the national soccer team in June. “I’m always very happy with the national team and I’m happy about every nomination,” said the 30-year-old professional from FC Barcelona, according to a statement by the German Football Association on Wednesday. On the other hand, after three intensive seasons without a summer break, he was happy “that the national coach agrees with me that I need this break and supports me in it”.
Flick showed understanding for Ter Stegen. “Marc is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Due to injuries, however, he has not been able to use the summer breaks for regeneration in the past two years,” said the 57-year-old. Especially with regard to the upcoming World Cup in Qatar at the end of the year, both agreed “that a normal game and training break this year is important and makes sense”.
Ter Stegen’s season in the Spanish league ends on May 22nd. A day later, the Flick team moves into a four-day training camp in Marbella. From May 30th, the team will meet in Herzogenaurach. The Nations League starts on June 4th with the game in Bologna against European champions Italy, after which the DFB selection continues against England on June 7th in Munich. This is followed by the games in Budapest on June 11 against Hungary and the second leg against Italy on June 14 in Mönchengladbach.

Buchwald criticizes Stuttgart’s squad planning
Honorary captain Guido Buchwald has criticized the composition of the squad at Bundesliga club VfB Stuttgart, which is threatened with relegation. “In planning the squad, too much emphasis was placed on fine footballers and a lot on youth. You can’t always invest in the future and forget the present. That’s one reason why VfB is doing so badly,” said the 1990 world champion on pay TV broadcaster Sky.
Buchwald calls for the end of the season and the possible relegation “fight, team spirit, togetherness and unity”. Then you have the quality “to keep the class”. After 32 games, the Swabians are in relegation rank 16 with a two-point lead over Arminia Bielefeld. “One point would be enough,” said Buchwald: “I think Bielefeld can still win, then we’re level on points and have the better goal difference.”
Stuttgart is visiting champions Bayern Munich on Sunday and expects European Cup aspirants 1. FC Köln on the last day of the game. Bielefeld still plays at VfL Bochum and against RB Leipzig.
