Record winner FC Sevilla is in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The Spaniards prevailed on Thursday in the knockout round of 16 from Duisburg against the Italian first division club AS Roma 2-0 (2-0). Because of the Corona pandemic, there was no first leg between the two teams in March, so only one game led to the decision. In the next round, Sevilla will meet Wolverhampton Wanderers or Olympiakos Piraeus next Tuesday (August 11 / 9:00 p.m.).

Sergio Reguilón (22nd) led the five-time title holder of the competition in the almost deserted Duisburg arena. Youssef En-Nesyri increased shortly before the break (44th). Roms Gianluca Mancini saw the red card after the foul (90. + 10).

Sevilla got off to a better start. Defender Jules Koundé failed after a corner on the crossbar (12th). Regulión scored ten minutes later after a nice solo. Afterwards, Rome struggled to put decisive pressure on the opponent – and let himself be countered. The second Sevilla goal came after a quick move with two passes, the template was given by winger Lucas Ocampos.

After the break, Rome tried to push for the connection goal, but failed to create many compelling chances. Instead, in the 73rd minute Koundé scored for Sevilla into the goal of the Romans, but referee Björn Kuipers (Netherlands) did not give the goal because of an offside position. Éver Banega failed with a free kick on the crossbar (90. + 1).

Leverkusen moves into the next round – Wolverhampton also continues
Bayer Leverkusen easily reached the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The Bundesliga club won 1-0 (0-0) against the Glasgow Rangers on Thursday evening and will face Inter Milan on Monday (9:00 p.m.) at the final tournament of the competition in Düsseldorf. Moussa Diaby (51st minute) rewarded the good performance of the team of coach Peter Bosz with the lead goal. The first leg five months ago in Glasgow had won Leverkusen 3-1.

Wolverhampton and Piraeus split 1-1 in the first leg. Raúl Jiménez scored on Thursday early in the first half with a penalty kick (9th). The Greeks grew stronger as a result, but failed to score. A supposed hit by Mady Camara was not given after using the video evidence because of a previous offside position (28.).
