The new suspension bridge at the Todtnauer waterfall is the longest in the country. But there are even more such bridges in Baden-Württemberg. Where it’s worth taking a trip and where it’s even free.
Of course, the most famous suspension bridge in the world is – or hangs – in San Francisco. It was inaugurated exactly 140 years ago. Cars and trucks travel across the 2.7-kilometer Golden Gate Bridge. In Baden-Württemberg, on the other hand, bridges that have no pillars but are suspended from long, strong cables are becoming more and more popular as tourist magnets. Some are tall and spectacular, some short and snug, and many are quite wobbly and rarely wider than a twin stroller. The newest attraction is in the southern Black Forest, directly above the spectacular Todtnauer waterfall. The footbridge of the bridge called “Blackforestline” swings out up to 1.50 meters to the side, the distance to the ground measures 120 meters, which is clearly visible underfoot. The transition is not dangerous, but visitors who are afraid of heights should be careful. The Todtnau Bridge with a view of the Black Forest mountains is not the longest in Germany, but it is the longest of its kind in Baden-Württemberg. These seven suspension bridges in the Southwest are worth visiting – but for quite different reasons.
