The motto this year is “Togetherness”, according to the press release from the Episcopal Ordinariate of Würzburg. Museums and other cultural institutions from around the world post photos every day that illustrate a selected hashtag. “We have participated in the past few years and have always had a very positive response,” says Rahel Ohlberg, responsible for marketing and public relations in the art department of the Diocese of Würzburg. How do you display the hashtag #CultureInQuarantine? You could, for example, equip a statue with mouth-nose protection and take pictures. Ohlberg has a better idea. “Most people do not know that there is a quarantine room in the museum depot. All objects that come to us are first placed in this room for two weeks.” How the museums interpret the hashtag is up to them. “It doesn’t just have to be works of art. There is also a look behind the scenes,” explains Ohlberg. For them, a photo has to be original, funny or interesting. “I’m trying to think of something that has to do with the hashtag around the corner. It can be an exciting picture, but also an exciting story.” The “MuseumWeek” starts on Monday, May 11th, with the hashtag #heroesMW. The other topics are #CultureInQuarantineMW, #togetherMW, #MuseumMomentsMW, #climateMW, #technologyMW and #dreamsMW. “There are already very special hashtags,” says Ohlberg. That is why there is text for every photo. “The visitors see the picture and the accompanying explanation. It’s not all self-explanatory.” Visitors can also write comments or ask questions about the photos. “For example, some want to know who the artist is or whether the work can be seen in the permanent exhibition.” “MuseumWeek” gives you contact with people and museums around the world, says Ohlberg. The users can view the contributions of all participating institutions. The museums in turn benefit from an international audience. “You can generate incredible reach.” According to the organizers, more than 60,000 institutions from over 100 countries have participated since it started in 2014.
