Serious Accident at Triathlon Championships in Hamburg: Motorcyclist Dead, Race Continues

Status: 04.06.2023 10:35 a.m

There was a serious accident at the triathlon championships in Hamburg. A motorcycle collided head-on with a cyclist. The race continues.

The accident occurred on a section of the route in the Hamburg district of Spadenland, which runs along a dike. The route passes each other there, so that the cyclists and the support vehicles meet there. The motorcyclist and his passenger, who was carrying a camera, and the amateur athlete collided head-on. A rescue helicopter was deployed. The motorcyclist has since died and the other two are injured.

ARD ended its live broadcast of the major event from Hansstadt. According to his manager, Olympic champion and world record holder Jan Frodeno will leave the triathlon.

Only nine athletes were able to continue the race as usual. All other participants had to pause behind the scene of the accident. After the accident, the race was about to be stopped. A shortening of the race was then considered, but the organizers rejected this again. The narrow route in the Hanseatic city is problematic.

Drivers have to get off their bikes

On the second lap of the cycle race, the riders again had to pass the scene of the accident, which had not yet been cleared. There, all drivers had to dismount in front of the accident site, push the bike over a dyke and then get on again. This came as a complete surprise to many drivers, who were not informed at all.

“Incredible and strange scenes. And that at a European championship. I’ve never seen that before,” said triathlon expert Sebastian Kienle on ARD.

It is not known what effects all this will have on the drivers and the overall ranking. The race is not only about the European title, but also about qualifying for the World Championship.
