Series of Conflicting Soviet Union Fractions of Asia

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

In December 1991, one of the superpowers of the time, Uni Soviet, officially disbanded.

The Soviet Union then split into 15 countries scattered in Asia and Europe.

The following is a list of the former Soviet Union countries in Asia.

1. Kazakhstan

For the past few days, Kazakhstan has been in chaos as thousands of people have taken to the streets. They protested the increase in LPG prices. The government had lowered prices, but the demonstrators were not satisfied.

Their demands ranged from disappointment with the government because of its authoritarianism, pervasive corruption, to socio-economic disparities.

The government then declared a state of emergency in response to the riots. They also claim to have managed to resolve the situation.

However, recently the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev ordered security forces to launch fire on the “terrorists.”

The word terrorist refers to protesters who are considered to have rioted and rebelled.

Kazakhstan declared independence on December 16, 1991. The country is the largest in central Asia and the ninth largest in the world.

Geographically, it is bordered by Russia to the north, China to the east, and Kyrgyzstan to the south.

2. Tajikistan

Tajikistan became independent in 1991. Shortly after that a civil war raged from 1992-1997.

The war has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than half a million Tajiks.

In 1994 elements of the government and rebels agreed to a ceasefire. The opposition leader who overthrew the previous government, Emomali Rahmonov, was elected president.

However, the fighting continued until June 1997. The war ended when the parties involved signed a peace agreement brokered by the United Nations (UN), Russia, and Iran.

After the war ended, internal political stability began to emerge and foreign aid also poured into the country.

Trade in commodities such as cotton, aluminum and uranium also contributes to the country’s economy.

Unfortunately that stability did not last much longer. At the end of July 2012, war broke out again.
