SERGIO MOMO. child actor | vanity

Sergio Momo becomes the ideal example to portray the new generation of artists that we like so much in Vanidad and that, especially in this issue, we celebrate. And it’s that, Even though his first big break in the acting world came just three years ago, being part of two global phenomena like ‘Elite’ and ‘Welcome to Eden’ has only confirmed that Sergio can only be brought in…or not .

Sergio, on your Instagram profile you define yourself as a “child actor”. What does the expression of these terms mean to you and what do you do?

It’s literally the origin (laughs). What I wanted to be, an unfulfilled dream that I will clearly never be able to achieve again but which served as the engine to dedicate myself to this.

You trained in contemporary dance at the JASM school in Tenerife, studied acting for 4 years at the Studio Juan Carlos Corazza and singing with Laura Godoy. When and why did you decide to opt for acting over dance or music?

My father was a musician and my mother his representative, so music has always been present in my house. Dance was the only ‘accessible’ artistic training I had in Tenerife, or rather, the only one that existed, and it was clear to me that I wanted to be on stage and be part of a show so to speak.

Your first big break came with Rober, a role you played in ‘El vecino’ alongside Quim Gutierrez and Clara Lago. What was it like working alongside two of the best-known faces in our country’s film industry?

It was one of the most magical experiences of my life, both for the cast I had to act with (there was also Catalina Sopelana, one of my best friends with whom I studied at the Corazza), and because they called me after moving to Los Angeles where, literally, I was only 5 days.

Working with Clara and Quim has been a gift. Both are great actors but also one of the best partners I could have had in my first series. They were very generous and made me feel like one of them from the first moment.

What other actors/actresses inspire you today?

I follow Florence Pugh’s career a lot. I think she’s an actress with a lot of courage and she has a very honest look. I am very interested in what she does.

And then came “Elite”. What did it mean for you to appear in this phenomenon?

It meant being in a big showcase where I not only had a great time but also let a lot of people get to know me. Also, I really want and had to do a big self-management exercise with various problems, both professional and personal, which really marked a before and after for me.

The fact that it is one of the most watched series at the moment could become an opportunity for your career, but also a threat. What was your purpose?

Get the part! That’s always the goal (laughs) Everything that comes after is so…but so…random, that you can’t take it as a fact (or, at least, not as an absolute fact). I knew it was a very successful series but also that this success shouldn’t be transferred necessarily me.

As an actor, do you often go through moments of conflict with yourself and with what you do?

Yup! And more than a feeling to banish, it’s something I think you need to befriend, because it won’t go away. That uncertainty, that insecurity will always be there… so you have to try not to overdo it, because that’s when it gets frustrating and I honestly don’t allow it (laughs).

That is why it is so important not to identify with one’s work, dream or passion and to separate the person from the artist. In this profession you are your tool, so any unwanted situation takes you on personal ground that does a lot of damage… You have to work on detachment, because from there you can enjoy everything much more. It’s kind of like “life doesn’t work out for me,” but out of conscience and knowing that at the end of the day you have to eat, you know?

Let’s talk about ‘Welcome to Eden’. Now that the second season is already a reality, what can you tell us about Nico?

I think Nico remained in a perpetual adolescence. Somehow, he hasn’t wanted to heal the huge wound he has in his ego and I don’t think he even has the tools to do that… so his journey in Season 2 is the absolute result of an ego and a huge and very, very deficient treated very badly by you…

Something that has been greatly appreciated by critics is that the cast of the series is not a “usual” casting. However, do you think the industry is moving in the right direction in terms of diversity?

Right now, more is more… until you reach a point where you see a production and it really doesn’t matter who casts it: it’s an all female cast because there have been so many productions made and with female protagonists which is not an event. And the same with the racial aspect.

In this case, the figure will allow us to simply enjoy the stories in a few years, without stopping to analyze whether it is a “usual” casting or not, because the eye will already be used to being in tune with the person on the screen. with its history. Empathy, I wish!

Besides all these previews, is there anything else we should know about you? Any other upcoming projects you can tell us about?

I can tell you that little by little I’m becoming more confident in planning what I want to do -or at least in a more concrete way- and I think next year this will bear fruit…

As for our 30th anniversary, what is the project you would be most excited to receive when you turn 30?

I’d like to make a musical.

Since you too like to take risks with fashion. What do you think of the new Glenn Martens collection for Diesel?

Sounds outrageous to me! When you entered the fashion show, you immersed yourself in a very particular atmosphere and even before the show began, you guessed what some clothes were going to tell you. The urban with the dystopian, crossing the denim moment… I say yes! I keep each of the waxed pieces.
