The Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) made official the extraordinary recovery period that will span from the beginning of the 2021-2022 school year to the first evaluation period, as well as various educational actions in order to guarantee the continuity of students in Mexico and reduce the school lag that they estimate up to two years.

Through an agreement published in the evening edition of the Official Gazette of the Federation (DOF) which will come into effect from Tuesday, the Secretariat determined to regulate the specific and extraordinary actions for the conclusion of this school year and the beginning of the next.

As established, to establish final grades in the current cycle, the learning obtained at a distance will be taken into account, considering the levels of communication and participation according to the following measures:

  • Students who maintained communication and participation during the three evaluation periods will be credited.
  • The students who communicated and participated in one or two levels, the teacher must carry out a general assessment of the knowledge obtained. Teachers should also assess whether students have a disability that prevents them from continuing the distance course in good shape.

In both primary and secondary education, a final grade or subject will be assigned and the minimum grade must be six. And in the event that the conditions for the general assessment do not exist, the process will be carried out until the end of the extraordinary recovery period (beginning 2021-2022 until the first evaluation period). In these cases, teachers should record observations and suggestions about learning progress.

The diagnostic assessment must be carried out on all educated people, at all levels, without exceptions. In addition, extend tutoring hours or actions that allow the recovery of grade learning.

To carry out this process, educational institutions must consider that:

  • Entities with an epidemiological green light must prioritize the attention of students who did not communicate online during the school year.
  • In the entities in yellow, schools will be able to organize attention sessions for students who did not communicate during online classes.

In early June, the Mexican Institute for Competitiveness (IMCO) He detailed that due to the closure of schools due to the covid-19 pandemic, Mexican students could have been delayed by the equivalent of two years, according to World Bank estimates.
