Sending a package with Bpost is more expensive between Black Friday and Christmas

Bpost temporarily and for the first time increases its rates to send a package between Black Friday and Christmas Day. How much is the surcharge? And is it cheaper to have a package delivered to one of the collection points instead of at home?

The end of the year is just around the corner and that means busy days for Bpost and its employees. During this period, the volume of letters and parcels increases significantly. Bpost processes an average of 549,000 parcels every day, with peaks of up to 750,000 per day during the busiest times. To absorb the additional operational costs during this intensive period, Bpost will implement a… surcharge of 1 euro per package shipped until December 25.

Bpost has been charging a higher cost price for its professional customers during this period for years. Bpost is now also extending temporary rate increases to you and me, their private customers.

How much is it?

You can arrange sending a package online as a private individual 5 euro. At this rate, you create the shipping label yourself and have the package delivered to one of the 3,000 collection points. You pay to send it to a specific address 1,40 euro extra. You pay for an additional warranty 1,35 euro.

A valuable package (here Bpost guarantees security and the recipient must sign upon receipt, ed.) sending it to someone will cost you from Black Friday to Christmas 8,75 euroyou can have this arranged for you at a point of sale and you pay 10,15 euro.

A small online store will also have to take the extra costs into account. They decide for themselves whether to pass this cost on to the end consumer.

Via this link you can easily calculate the cost price and create your shipping label. This way you save on costs by partly taking the administrative work into your own hands and out of the hands of Bpost.

Companies and self-employed people (in secondary profession) who have their products delivered with Bpost will also feel it in their costs. A professional shipper, such as a small online store, will have to take the additional costs into account. Each online store will have to decide for itself whether or not to pass on these costs (in full) to the end consumer.

Stamps are also more expensive

In addition to the “end of year surcharge”, the prices of stamps will also increase in 2024. You currently pay 1.39 euros per piece for a non-priority stamp, but this will increase to 1,43 euro. For priority stamps, the current rate is 2.17 euros each, but this will increase to 2,27 euro in 2024, of 2,23 euro per piece if you buy a whole sheet of ten stamps.

The postage rate for shipments within Europe is currently: 2,66 euro when purchasing at least five stamps and 2,78 euro when purchasing per piece. For international shipments outside Europe the current rate is 2,88 euro when purchasing at least five stamps and 3 euro per Unit.

Bpost warns that prices could rise again by 3 percent in the course of 2024. For those who regularly send letters, it may be worthwhile to build up a stock of stamps.
