Semiconductors: US tightens grip on Huawei

The noose tightens on Huawei. As tensions between China and the United States have escalated since the coronavirus crisis, Washington on Friday launched new restrictive measures to prevent the Chinese telecom giant from buying semiconductors designed with technologies and American software. Even when these precious chips are assembled outside the United States.

These regulations will apply in four months, said the Commerce Department in its press release. It will affect Huawei, because if it produces internally (via its HiSilicon subsidiary) part of the chips it needs, it calls on other suppliers. They will now have to apply for authorization from the American administration to work with the Chinese giant.
