Self-sufficient settlement opened on Marker Wadden

Today a completely self-sufficient village has opened in the Marker Wadden nature reserve. The islands are not connected to the electricity network and the sewer.

The Marker Wadden consist of five islands. One of these features a number of buildings made of wood from Dutch forests. There are an office for the island guards, a research station for scientists, a visitor center and four holiday homes.

Various sustainable systems have been built in to provide visitors and scientists with water and electricity. There are solar panels on the buildings. If they do not provide enough power, there is also a windmill on the island. The water comes from a local source and is purified on the island itself.

“Integrating the various sustainable systems was a huge puzzle. There are no examples of a completely self-sufficient system, so we had to work out a lot ourselves”, project leader André Rijsdorp tells Broadcaster Flevoland.
