Seine-Saint-Denis facing the Covid

BibliographyObs. You have been working for several years on the health status of Seine-Saint-Denis: what do we know about the excess mortality observed since the start of the Covid epidemic?

Audrey Mariette. At first glance, there is an enigma there. The Covid mainly strikes people over 65. Seine-Saint-Denis having a much younger population than elsewhere, it should have been less affected than other departments of Ile-de-France and than Grand-Est, the two main clusters of Covid. However, it is not the case.

According to INSEE figures, which relate to the period from 1er March to April 6, mortality in Seine-Saint-Denis doubled (+ 101%) compared to the same period in 2019. After Haut-Rhin (+ 143%), it is the French department which knows the most significant excess mortality, followed by Hauts-de-Seine (+99%), Val-de-Marne (+78%), Vosges (+74%) and Paris (+61%). In addition, it is the department where the excess mortality of those under 65 is the highest (+ 63%).

What did we know about the Covid? The answer is in the journal “Science”

How is this explained?

Audrey Mariette. Even if we can only put forward hypotheses (which will have to be verified by carrying out in-depth investigations), certain factors already emerge. The first relates to the sociology of the department: 55% of the active population are employees and manual workers (compared to 47.9% at the national level); 61.4% work in construction, trade, transportation and services
