The 32nd formation of the National Hockey League now has a face. The new expansion squad, set to debut in the 2021-2022 season, will be called the Seattle Kraken and the organization unveiled its colors and logo on Thursday.
Inspired by the late Seattle Metropolitans, who played from 1917 to 1924 in the Pacific Coast Hockey League (PCHA) and won the Stanley Cup in 1917, the Kraken logo is an “S” in the middle of which passes a tentacle representing the Kraken , this fantastic creature from Scandinavian mythology.
“The Metropolitans were the first American team to lift the Stanley Cup. They are part of the history of our city and we pay tribute to them by wearing the S. We will aim to bring back the Stanley Cup in their honor ”, we read in a text explaining what led to the design the Kraken logo, published on the website of the future team of the Bettman circuit.

On this logo, in very dark blue, almost black, and lighter blue colors, is added a red eye.

As for the Kraken name, team president Tod Leiweke mentioned that the organization chose to listen to the people.
“It is the choice of the amateurs, who promoted and defended it,” said the man who announced the team’s colors directly on the construction site of the future home of the team, the Climate Pledge arena, in front of hundreds of workers who had been granted leave for the occasion.

Seattle Mayor Jenny Durkan and team president Tod Leiweke raised a Kraken flag over the Space Needle, the tower that represents one of Seattle’s strongest symbols.

Several names had been circulating in recent months, but Kraken had been the most popular name among the people of Seattle. The Sockeyes, Metropolitans or Evergreens were also part of the discussions.
Now that the team colors have been revealed, the Kraken will be able to focus on their team lineup.

As early as Thursday’s unveiling, the team’s Twitter account mentioned in its description: “Now that we have a name, we’re thinking of all the possible strategies to draft your favorite player.”
The general manager of training has already been named in Ron Francis, but the team still does not have a head coach.
The expansion draft will take place, in principle, in June 2021 and the NHL has already announced that the rules will be the same as for the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017.

A tribute to the Metropolitans
The “S” is a tribute to the Seattle Metropolitans, the first American team to win the Stanley Cup in 1917.
Red alert !
The red eye of the beast represents the danger of the mythical Kraken. “If you have seen it, it is already too late”, we say in the theatrical description of the logo. The color red, also used on the team’s jersey, represents the “red alert” that the Kraken attack would trigger.
A nod to Puget Sound
The tentacle, the main feature of the Kraken, is also a symbol “of the deep and dark waters of Puget Sound, the strait that borders the city of Seattle”, explains on the team’s website.
