Scottish independence referendum – date announced

Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said the decision will be subject to legal scrutiny in the Supreme Court, but she is convinced that she is right and successful.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, Sturgeon said that the path chosen by the government will not be easy, but it must be passed in order to be able to choose their own future.

Scottish nationalist plan: after the pandemic – secession from Britain
The first referendum, held in Scotland in 2014, was made possible by the fact that London gave the Scottish government the appropriate powers.

However, in the 8 years that have passed since the first referendum, both British Conservative Prime Ministers – Theresa May and Boris Johnson – have consistently refused to give permission for a second referendum.

However, Nicola Sturgeon said she was starting the settlement process with a second vote.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the Scottish opposition are urging the first minister to pay attention first of all to the pressing problems of the Scots, and not to go in cycles in the referendum.

In a referendum in 2016, 52% of British voters supported leaving the EU, while 62% of Scots voted against. Sturgeon claims that Scotland was then taken out of the Union against her will.

Recall that in the spring of 2019, Sturgeon, during a speech at the spring conference of the Scottish National Party, said that it was time for the region to choice for independence. She stressed that London should not interfere with Scotland’s right to self-determination.

RBC-Ukraine wrote that in 2020 Scotland planned to hold a referendum about secession from Britain. At that time, elections were planned to be held in May 2021.
