KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. One of the problems with the spread of the corona virus is the ability of the virus to survive on surfaces for hours.
On the surface of solid objects, the corona virus can be overcome by spraying disinfectants. However, what about the surface of a water-absorbing object like cardboard?
Quoted by Science Alert, November 11, 2020, scientists from various scientific disciplines discovered cold plasma that can deactivate the corona virus on the surface of objects in 30 seconds without damaging the object’s material.
The virus that causes Covid-19 will even be destroyed if it continues to be in contact with plasma for 3 minutes. Plasma is the fourth form of matter besides liquids, solids and gases. Usually plasma is formed naturally in the outside of the atmosphere.
These charges are formed when electrons are separated from their atoms (making the atom positively charged), and together create a soup of charged particles that is unstable and more reactive than in its gas equivalent state.
Cold plasma has been shown to fight drug-resistant bacteria and even cancer cells. It disrupts the surface structure and viral DNA without damaging human tissue.
The cold plasma research for the corona virus was led by Zhitong Chen of the University of California in Los Angeles.

Chen, Wirz, and colleagues designed and 3D printed an atmospheric plasma jet device driven by argon gas (an inert and stable element that is one of the most abundant gases in air).
The device sends fast-moving electrons through the gas, removing gaseous atoms from the outer electrons as they collide. It only takes 12W of power to work.
