Scientists have found mysterious golden balls under a Mexican pyramid. They have no idea what they were for

Many golden orbs have been found under an ancient Mayan pyramid in Teotihuacán, Mexico. This surprised the archaeologists very much, because not only did they not expect to find a cave under the pyramid that had not been explored for 2000 years, but they did not even expect to find gold. Although the Mayan civilization was famous for having enormous wealth, the greatest treasure was never found. But the “golden balls” were not made of gold.

The hundreds of strange, two-thousand-year-old orbs are now another mystery. In addition, no one had any idea about the underground spaces under the third largest pyramid in Teotihuacán until 2003. Then, thanks to the rain, a pit was discovered near the entrance to the six-tiered Temple of the Feathered Serpent.

Archaeologist Edwin Barnhart described the mysterious orbs as “very interesting objects”. At the same time, he stated that he had never seen anything like it in any other archaeological context. The balls found are not made of gold, but are made of clay, but the outside is covered with a kind of gold coating. It is this that gives them the appearance of golden balls. What is their origin?

Mysteries of the Maya

The Mayan civilization has become the focus of many researchers. Ancient Teotihuacán is one of the most mysterious places on earth. We have no idea who built the huge temple complex or why they abandoned it.

The golden orbs found under the Temple of the Feathered Serpent opened the way to an unknown tunnel. Scientists exploring the caves with a robotic probe penetrated the darkness, hoping to find the remains of ancient humans.

The search led the scientist to a mysterious tunnel, which they found after about 250 meters in the cave. At its end were those mysterious balls which were later identified as colored clay. And another Mayan mystery was born. No one was able to determine what the balls were for. The spheres range in size from 3 to 13 centimeters in diameter, and their core is not made of metal, but of clay. They appear golden due to the mineral jarosite, which they are coated with and which is formed during the oxidation of pyrite, known for its color similar to gold.

As one of the theories, the theory that sacred rituals were held in the cave emerged. The walls and ceiling of both cave chambers were covered with a substance similar to a ball, i.e. a powder of mineral origin composed of magnetite, pyrite and hematite. The golden flecks on the cave walls glowed when the light shone upon them during the ceremony. The cave thus appeared as if it shone with thousands of stars or points of light in such a way as to evoke the universe.

Underground Sky Study and the Dresden Codex

The Mayan calendar was heavily calibrated to the orbital parameters of the planets in our solar system. He mostly captured the inner planets. This is where the idea came from that the cave could be used to study the sky underground.

“These magnificent orbs of yellow material strongly suggest that someone was representing the planets,” its author stated in his book The Key to Synchronicity David Wilcock.

The Maya were most interested in the planet Mars, they were fascinated by its orbit. Its connection with the Mayan calendar is depicted in the Dresden Codex, which describes the calendar in relation to the movement of Mars across the sky.

The Dresden Codex is the oldest known written record from the Americas, rediscovered in Dresden after hundreds of years. In many ways, it is considered an astronomical almanac devoted to various cosmic phenomena. The almanac also divides the days into ten groups of 78 days each, which equals 780 days, or the synodic period of Mars, or the time it takes for Mars to return to the same place on the horizon from a human perspective. Above the almanac itself is shown a band of sky with celestial symbols, among which is a kind of dragon, the face of Mars.

Scientists believe that the mysterious golden orbs may have helped the Mayans to study the red planet more closely and compile comprehensive descriptions of the night sky.
