The SARS-CoV-2 virus, which causes the COVID-19 disease, infects cells with the help of appendages similar to tentacles. The findings of scientists from the University of California at the United States were published in the Financial Times, RIA Novosti reported.

The filamentous processes pierce the membrane of healthy cells, which accelerates their infection and the spread of infection throughout the body. Most other viruses do not grow such tentacles, the researchers emphasized.

The authors hope that the discovery will help to better select medications and more effectively treat the infection. For example, scientists suggest using a number of cancer drugs.
