Astronomers believe that they may have found a new asteroid “at birth”.
It’s exciting because this is the first time that asteroid photos have been taken.
Scientists were observing a small star called “AB Aurigae”, which is about 500 light-years away from Earth, when they observed a thick disk of dust and gas orbiting the small star.
Scientists have discovered a spiral structure rooted in this disc of dust and gas with “developments” near the center, a sign of the formation of a new planet.
Scientists used the European Southern Observatory, which includes a giant telescope called VLT, to take pictures. This is a very advanced telescope in Chile that astronomers use to study the universe.
“Thousands of planets outside the solar system have been identified so far, but little is known about how they are formed. We need to monitor very small systems to determine the moment when the planets are formed,” said Dr. Anthony Bocaletti, who leads the study from the Paris Observatory in France.
In the past, it was very difficult to take pictures of these sharp and deep disks in order to find the “developments” that accompany the birth of a new planet.
The Southern European Observatory is currently building a very large telescope called (ELT) on a mountain in Chile. Observers hope to allow the study of planets in greater detail.
