Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia Traces of a hidden ocean discovered in space. The location is on Europa, one of Jupiter’s moons.

The sea is hidden beneath the icy surface and was discovered using data from the James Webb Space Telescope. Initially, studies found carbon dioxide on Europa’s surface.

Scientists then ask the question whether its appearance comes from the mysterious ocean there.

Finally, two research teams led by the United States (US) conducted research to find answers. They used data from the Webb telescope’s infrared spectrometer.

The result is that the most carbon dioxide is in Tara Regio, an area with an area of 1,800 kilometers. The place has jagged hills and cracks, which one theory says is due to the freezing of warm water that rose and melted the surface of the ice long ago.

“[Karbon dioksida] probably came from the deep sea,” said Cornell University planetary scientist and lead author of the study, Samantha Trumbo, quoted from Phys, Monday (25/9/2023).

Not only that, researchers also found table salt in the Tara Regio area. Launch Mayo Clinicthe salt is usually mined from underground deposits and processed to remove other minerals.

This salt reportedly makes the Tara Regio region yellower compared to other regions on Europa which are white. This discovery also made researchers suspect it came from the ocean.

“So now we have salt and Co2. We’re starting to study more of that internal chemistry,” explains Trumbo.

To collect more data, two missions to Europa have been prepared. One of them is Juice which was launched in April and NASA’s mission, Europa Clipper, will depart in October 2024.
