Irene Schouten won the 3,000m at the World Championships in Heerenveen on Sunday with a track record. Jutta Leerdam was the highest scoring Dutch runner in the 500m with a third-place finish.
Schouten was much stronger in Thialf than the competition. The Olympic champion in the 3,000m was more than 3.5 seconds faster than number two Isabelle Weidemann of Canada: 3.54.05 to 3.57.70.
Schouten dived with her best time more than half a second short of her own record. Last October she scored 3.54.59 at NK distances.
The North Holland woman suffered a rare defeat in the 3 kilometers in Stavanger last week. Norway’s Ragne Wiklund then took gold in her country, but she had to settle for third place on Sunday. She drove a time of 3:58.31.
Joy Beune finished just off the podium with a time of 3.58.72. She finished ahead of Canada’s Ivanie Blondin (3:59.82). Number six Marijke Groenewoud was the last skater with a time under four minutes (3.59.90).
Antoinette Rijpma-de Jong, who won the World Cup in the 1,500m for the first time in her career on Saturday, finished eighth with a time of 4:00.24. The 27-year-old skater finished just behind Martina Sáblíková (4:00.13).
