Earlier in the day it was already known that a number of mink farms in Brabant where the coronavirus has been found in animals are being culled. This will start on Friday under the leadership of the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA), Schouten said.
It concerns six companies with eight locations in Gemert-Bakel, Laarbeek, Deurne and Sint Anthonis.
Psychological help
It is a “difficult decision” for the affected farmers, the minister said. But according to her, the sector understands “that we are taking this measure.” Psychological help is available to the affected farmers.
The companies that are culled can claim compensation. This comes from the Animal Health Fund, which is financed from public funds. After being cleared and vacant for a period of time, a company may continue farming with farmers until the ban on mink breeding comes into effect in 2024.
The cabinet is also currently looking at a voluntary stop scheme for mink farmers. According to the minister, it is now being determined what exactly this arrangement should look like.
There are also two known cases where humans are most likely infected by mink with the coronavirus.
