School in Burg Seeks New Staff Amidst Controversy Over Right-Wing Extremism

Burg/Potsdam – The school in Burg im Spreewald is looking for new staff even without the two teachers who left because of right-wing hostilities. The Brandenburg Ministry of Education tweeted on Tuesday that they were looking for a teacher for geography and mathematics. Current job applications for teachers throughout Brandenburg are posted regularly and most are clicked, said ministry spokeswoman Ulrike Grönefeld. The position in Burg has been advertised for some time and the application phase is ongoing.

In April, teachers Laura Nickel and Max Teske publicized daily right-wing extremist incidents at their school in a fire letter, triggering a nationwide debate. Both had described in an anonymous letter that they were confronted with right-wing extremism, sexism and homophobia on a daily basis at the school in Spreewald. There are swastikas on furniture, right-wing extremist music in the classroom and anti-democratic slogans in the school corridors. They also experienced a “wall of silence”.

After that, the teachers were increasingly exposed to right-wing hostilities. State security is investigating. Both want to change schools. This year you will receive the “Award for civil courage against anti-Semitism, right-wing extremism and racism”.
