School closings, but no lockdown in New York

Because of the rapidly increasing number of new coronavirus infections, schools in nine New York neighborhoods have to close again. Today, all public and private schools in the affected areas in the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn remained closed, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo said.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio had previously requested the schools to be closed. However, Cuomo did not comply with de Blasio’s request to order the closure of non-mandatory shops.

New York is the only major city in the United States where students were allowed to return to classes at the start of the new school year. Metropolises like Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Philadelphia instead continue to rely on online teaching due to the coronavirus.

New York was one of the hardest hit cities in the world by the pandemic in spring. Almost 24,000 people died in the east coast metropolis as a result of their infection. Strict exit restrictions were in place for weeks
