Krefeld / Mönchengladbach. Actually, the rehearsals for the play “Wilhelm Tell” by Friedrich Schiller should have been going on for weeks. The premiere would be celebrated on May 16 at the Krefeld Theater, directed by Matthias Gehr. Actually – this word has been accompanying theater professionals for many weeks when they look at their schedule, which was already in place before the corona crisis turned everything upside down. But the Krefeld and Mönchengladbach theaters have a digital presence – artists send their own video clips from their “home office” or, as with the successful multi-part “BackenohneMehl” with Jannike Schubert, even broadcast live from their own kitchens.

A larger live project is now being created with the scenic reading of “Wilhelm Tell”: On the original premiere evening, May 16, streaming will take place directly from the Krefeld stage at 7.30 p.m. As before, no spectators are allowed in the theater, but the actors were able to rehearse the reading under the prescribed corona regulations – with the necessary distance, which they will also keep during the live broadcast on Saturday evening. And because it is not played but read, explanations are needed here and there so that viewers can more easily understand the action on the screen. That is why director Matthias Gehren has introduced a narrator who reads the stage directions.

“A total of five cameras film the actors from different perspectives, so that switching between long shot, half long shot and close-up is possible”, explains dramaturge Thomas Blockhaus. The complex project is being carried out in collaboration with KRähennest-TV. Director Matthias Gehr recommends enjoying the reading with headphones: “This means that the sound that Jörg Ostermayer has created comes across well.”

The live stream of the scenic reading will be on the home page of the theater website on May 16 www.theater-kr-mg.de available.

“Wilhelm Tell” will be made up for the stage version in the 2020/21 season when regular performance is possible again.
