Scheringa Museum becomes residential care complex | NOS

The Scheringa Museum in Opmeer has been sold. Real estate organization SVE Group wants to renovate the complex and realize a combination of housing and care.

This means that, after more than ten years, an interpretation has been found for the 10,000 square meter building. In 2009, the construction of Dirk Scheringa’s museum came to a halt after the bankruptcy of his DSB Bank. Various initiatives were launched for the building, but without success.

In 2015, a real estate entrepreneur from Obdam bought the building from the bankruptcy trustees in 2015 for almost 1 million euros. Estate agent Geert Klaver was appointed in 2017 to sell the museum. A deal in 2018 ripped off at the last minute, but now we have still managed to find a buyer. “The plan responds to the growing need for care, it helps to solve the housing shortage and it creates employment,” says the broker.

It is still unclear what exactly the project will look like and when it will be delivered. The new owner and the municipality of Opmeer are discussing this. As soon as plans are finalized, renovations will also start, NH Nieuws writes.

Collection

Dirk Scheringa’s collection consisted of paintings and other art objects in the style of the (magical) realism of artists such as Carel Willink, Charley Toorop, Jan Mankes, Pyke Koch, Wim Schuhmacher and Dick Ket.

Billionaire Hans Melchers bought the former Scheringa collection in 2012. He then built Museum MORE in Gorssel to house the collection.
