If it is up to Schalke 04, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will also play at the German club next season. The 37-year-old striker currently has an expiring contract and indicated earlier to retire after this season.
“What is certain is that we will talk together”, sports director Peter Knäbel told the Friday Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung. “What Klaas-Jan shows as a football player and as a personality is of great class.”
“He also has a very positive influence on other players. We want to continue with him. Whether it is feasible depends on many things,” said Knäbel in conversation with the German medium.
Huntelaar switched from Ajax to Schalke 04 in January, where he also played for between 2010 and 2017. Due to injuries, the 76-time Orange-international has only played four times so far. In those matches he scored one goal.
Schalke is in a dramatic season and has to fear relegation. The club from Gelsenkirchen is the last player in the Bundesliga with only thirteen points from 28 games. The gap in ‘safe’ fifteenth place is thirteen points.
Huntelaar and Schalke 04 will visit SC Freiburg on Saturday. The match starts at 3.30 pm.
