Scala opens with four concerts in July – Vorarlberger Nachrichten

133 days after the closure due to the corona pandemic, the Milan Scala will start again with four concerts in July. Performances by well-known singers and musicians from the Scala Orchestra are planned. The concerts, at which distance rules must be observed, are intended for a maximum of 600 spectators, said the Scala.

The Italian baritone Luca Salsi, who has already played leading roles in two Scala premieres (“Andrea Chénier” and “Tosca”), will perform on July 6, together with the pianist Beatrice Rana and the cellist Mischa Maisky. The program includes arias and pieces by Liszt. On July 8th, tenor Francesco Meli follows alongside soprano Federica Lombardi. Pieces by Mozart, Donizetti and Puccini as well as Verdi arias are planned. They are accompanied by the violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja and the pianist Giulio Zappa.

The third concert on July 14th is dedicated to new voices. The protagonists are young singers who started an international career after training at the Scala Academy, and young talents who have made a name for themselves in the most recent competitions. Musicians from the Scala Orchestra perform at the fourth concert on July 15.

In September the Scala is planning a big concert in the Milan Cathedral. Giuseppe Verdi’s “Messa da Requiem” will be performed under the direction of Scala music director Riccardo Chailly as a tribute to the fatalities of the coronavirus pandemic. The concert will also be repeated in Bergamo and Brescia, two of the cities most affected by the virus.
