Riyadh: one dead due to heavy rains in the province of Asir in Saudi Arabia. A local news portal reported that one person died and another was hospitalized after being caught in the flooding.

The death was reported in Al Majarida governorate in the Asir region of southwestern Saudi Arabia. The accident occurred after the car in which the group of two were traveling was run over. The civil protection teams immediately arrived at the scene, but one person in the car died. The Al Ikhbariyya portal reported that the second passenger was also taken to hospital with injuries.

Details of the deceased and injured are not available. Many areas of Saudi Arabia have experienced heavy rains in recent weeks. Following this, the authorities announced a holiday for Jeddah’s educational establishments.

Traffic authorities in Saudi Arabia have repeatedly warned against driving through overflowing valleys. Officials have warned that violators will be fined up to 10,000 riyals. The General Traffic Department clarified that crossing the valleys during heavy rains puts people’s lives at risk and is considered a violation of the law.

In the event of water flooding onto the roads, the authorities have ordered people to stay at home and not go out as much as possible. The management also asked for safety precautions and to follow the instructions given by the civil protection through various media and social networking sites.

Heavy rains and winds hit the Saudi coastal city of Jeddah and surrounding areas last week, killing two people and causing major damage. The National Weather Service reported that the six-hour rain was heavier than the rain that caused the 2009 floods. Homes and vehicles were submerged in water from heavy rains in many places. It was also reported that many vehicles were swept away by the strong current.
