Saudi Arabia Disburses $250 Million Aid to Yemeni Government in Fight Against Houthis

Riyadh

Government Arab Saudi disbursed aid of US$ 250 million or the equivalent of Rp. 3.9 trillion to the government wealth which is internationally recognized. Riyadh supports the Yemeni government in its fight against the rebels Houthi which now controls the capital and a number of regions in the country.

As reported AFPMonday (12/2/2024), the aid was provided by Saudi on Sunday (11/2), following an initial payment of the same amount announced in August last year, when Riyadh committed to providing a total of US$ 1.2 billion to reduce the deficit government budget and paying the salaries of civil servants.

“The second wave of grants to help overcome the Yemeni government’s budget deficit has been transferred to the Yemeni Central Bank in Aden, amounting to US$ 250 million to support salaries, wages and expenses,” said the Saudi Ambassador to Yemen, Mohammed al-Jaber, via social media.

Yemen’s internationally recognized government moved to Aden, a port city on the country’s southern coast, after the Iran-backed Houthis seized the capital Sanaa in 2014.

In 2015, Saudi mobilized an international coalition aimed at ousting the Houthis from power in Yemen.

The ensuing war in Yemen has killed hundreds of thousands of people, both directly in fighting and indirectly due to the maritime and air blockade imposed by Saudi.

A United Nations (UN) brokered ceasefire agreement from April 2022 triggered a sharp decline in fighting in Yemen. The ceasefire officially ended six months later, but fighting remained largely at a standstill.
