The SATSE Nursing Union has denounced the piling up of biological waste at the Nuestra Señora de la Candelaria University Hospital, a situation that it attributes to the incapacity of the Stericycle company, the concessionaire of this service and that poses a danger due to the enormous amount of material accumulated due to the Covid-19 pandemic. “In the case of the side of the Hospital de La Candelaria, it is filled with full tanks and they are not taken away. This poses a serious danger because they do not have the capacity to sterilize so much material and it is biological materials that must be treated in a special way”, Mendoza pointed out who also warned that it is a situation they are suffering “all the managements of the hospital centers of the Archipelago”.
For its part, the Ministry of Health recognizes this situation, which it attributes to the high incidence of COVID and the large number of patients both in the ward and in the ICU. However, they assert that the waste is perfectly sealed and complying with security measures and that steps are already being taken to expedite its removal.
